Brazil received unanimous approval from more than 60 member countries of the International Transport Forum (ITF) to become a new member country. O ITFa forum where transport ministers meet to discuss mobility policies aimed at improving people’s quality of life, took place in Germany and was attended by Renan Filho, transport minister of the current government.

With admission, Brazil becomes the 65th member of the ITF, and the sixth Latin American country to join the body, alongside Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Costa Rica

The ITF’s mission is to promote a deeper understanding of the role of transport in economic growth, environmental sustainability and social inclusion, and to raise the public profile of transport policy. She plays the role of a “think tank“, serving as a platform for discussion and pre-negotiation of policy issues relating to all modes of transport. The ITF Annual Summit represents the largest global meeting of transport ministers and is the main venue for mobility policy dialogue at the international level.

ITF Secretary General Young Tae Kim emphasized the commitment of participating countries to sharing best practices in the transport sector, saying: “Member countries are willing to share their own experiences with Brazil, assisting it in overcoming challenges faced in the transport sector. I have full confidence that this collaboration will be mutually beneficial and I look forward to seeing Brazil become a full member of the ITF.”

Also according to Young Tae Kim, secretary general of the ITF, said that the body welcomes Brazil with open arms, adding that the country brings a wealth of knowledge that will benefit all members.

“Brazil gave the world BRT; has the second largest number of airports in the world, the second busiest port in Latin America [Santos] and is home to the third largest aircraft manufacturer in the world [Embraer]”, he listed.

For the international market specialist, Luis Campos, Brazil’s inclusion in the ITF comes at a time of great relevance, as the country regains its position of regional leadership and returns to playing a central role in restructuring the economy and tackling issues related to climate change”. Furthermore, for it to be alongside great powers such as European countries are opportunities for prosperous business in the logistics and railway sector for Brazil.
