A new report from OpenSignal found that fifth-generation mobile connection coverage – a popular 5G – was increased by 6.3% in Brazil. Furthermore, the average upload speed in the country also increased by 4.4%.
The survey covered the period between November 1, 2023 and January 29, 2024, comparing it with the same time in previous years. According to the documentation, there was greater concern regarding taking 5G to more remote areas, with Amapá and Acre seeing the biggest growth in coverage year on year.
Some highlights of the report:
- Amapá and Acre recorded an increase in 5G coverage of 5.5% each
- the biggest relative increases in average 5G speed were in the states of Piauí (21%) and Rio Grande do Norte (17.9%)
- Maranhão had the biggest increase in upload speed, with 30.5%
- Santa Catarina, Rondônia, Espírito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul recorded drops in download speed via 5G: the first was 18.2%, while the others were all just above 5%
The conclusion of the report is that 5G expanded its average coverage across the entire national territory exponentially. However, the average download and upload speed – that is, the quality and stability of the connection – had a more timid improvement.
According to data from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), regulatory frameworks paved the way for the 5G structure to be installed in 3,678 municipalities – this, in practical terms, means that around 85% of the national population can take advantage of the benefits of connection.
It is worth noting, however, that these are potential numbers, not absolute. In other words, 85% of the population is capable of having the structure, but a portion of this still does not have it.
OpenSignal stated that the federal government’s next challenge is to expand the digital footprint of 5G, at the same time that it must work to reduce the connection disparity seen between urban and rural regions – the latter, still with little or no digital presence. strong presence in the country’s telephone infrastructure.
