The death toll from heavy rain and flooding in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state has risen to 147, up from 143 and 136 last weekend (11-12-05-2024).

As the local authorities announced today Monday, the fate of 127 people continues to be unknown at the same time that 147 people in the Rio Grande in Sul have met a tragic death in the floods. Every day for 2 weeks marked by the severe weather that hit the region, the death toll in southern Brazil is increasing.

Heavy rains have resulted in overflowing rivers, while floods have blocked roads and caused transport problems, resulting in shortages of basic goods in some areas.

The state has a population of 10.9 million, while 340,000 of them were forced to leave their homes, according to the same agency.

Due to the intense weather phenomena, houses and infrastructures have suffered enormous damages. Residents have lost their properties and are making efforts to clear the streets of water and mud.

“Salgado Filho Airport in #PortoAlegre flooded! The ‘worst weather disaster ever’ has claimed over 145 lives in Brazil and the worst may not be over as more record floods are predicted!” wrote a media outlet in ‘X’.

Fears of further severe flooding continue to exist in the region as forecasters predict a new wave of bad weather is set to hit in the coming days.
