Brazil: Brazilian football legend Pelé admitted to palliative care, his chemotherapy treatment interrupted

According to the daily Folha de São Paulo, Pelé, aged 82, suffering from colon cancer, was placed in palliative care at the Albert-Einstein Hospital in São Paulo.

Brazilian football legend Pelé was admitted to a palliative care unit following chemotherapy no longer had the expected effects on his colon cancer, the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported on Saturday. The 82-year-old was hospitalized once more on Tuesday for a re-evaluation of his cancer treatment and he is also suffering from a respiratory infection, according to medical reports.

His treatment interrupted

The medical report released this Friday, December 2, indicated that he was responding well to antibiotic treatment and that his state of health was tending to improve. According to Folha de S. Paulo, the former footballer’s chemotherapy treatment was interrupted and he was transferred to palliative care, where he is now only treated for pain and breathing difficulties. Pelé underwent surgery for a colon tumor in September 2021 and has since been followed in hospital. He posted on his Instagram account on Thursday that he had been hospitalized for his “monthly checkup” and thanked his fans for worrying regarding his health. His manager and the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo did not immediately respond to requests from Archyde.com.

Awful news that the great Pelé has been moved to end-of-life palliative care following he stopped responding to chemotherapy. The only footballer in history to win 3 World Cups, and an icon of the game at the level of Muhammad Ali in boxing. So sad. ? pic.twitter.com/5BAolLnmh2
