The Lula government published this Wednesday (3) in the Official Gazette (DOU) Decree 11,515 revoking a decision taken by former President Jair Bolsonaro. The measure returns with the principle of reciprocity requiring, as of October 1st, a visa for tourists from the United States, Australia, Canada and Japan who want to visit Brazil.
In 2019, Bolsonaro published Decree 9,731 waiving visas for tourists from these countries for a maximum period of 180 days for tourism, business, transit, artistic and sports activities or in exceptional situations due to national interest. The decision, however, was unilateral, making Brazilians need authorization to enter these nations.
According to a study carried out by the federal government, the removal of the visa requirement did not reflect a considerable increase in the number of tourists from these four countries.
