The Verlinden family plumbing business in the province of Antwerp will have to do without one of the siblings’ sons for a while. But father Jan and his sons Pieter and Johan do not blame their brother Philip, because the latter has a good excuse. He saved the life of his niece Roxanne.
Little Roxanne Verlinden was born at the beginning of the year. But shortly following his birth, doctors diagnosed him with liver problems.
She absolutely needed a transplant and was therefore placed on a waiting list by doctors, as her parents were not eligible for the donation.
“But a few weeks ago, everything accelerated,” explains Johan Verlinden, one of the brothers, to gva. “Roxanne’s state of health was not stable enough to wait to receive a donation via the waiting list,” he says. In fact, benefiting from a transplant via the waiting list can take up to years. It was therefore necessary to move as quickly as possible, so the doctors spoke with the family to find solutions.

Doctors then ran tests to see if other family members might be eligible for a transplant, and found that Roxanne’s two uncles were, including Philip, the oldest uncle. young man aged 29.
“We even have the same blood type as Roxanne, so no blood transfusion is necessary,” explains Johan, the other uncle. “We both applied to help heal our niece.” It was ultimately Philip who was chosen.
The surgeons therefore removed a piece of Philip’s liver to transplant it to Roxanne.
Both are now recovering, following the operation which went well! Doctors say that Philipp will soon be able to return to normal life. For Roxanne, the recovery will take a little longer, but she should be cured, all thanks to her uncle’s love!
