Very involved in community life

It was in the summer of 2022 that Nenette’s tumor was detected. “She was a very active young girl”, explains her dad, moved. At the time, she was in exam period and had just done her dance performance. And we found it weird the week following. She showed signs of meningitis. After several examinations, the doctors announced to us that she suffered from a brain tumour.”

On Monday, the doctors carried out more in-depth examinations and on Friday of the same week, she was operated on.

“She was operated on for a tumor in the canal that irrigates the brain, resumes her dad. We were at the CHU before going to the Citadelle in pediatrics. After a few days, we realized that she was losing her mobility and speech. Nenette did chemo and radiation, we also tried homeopathic treatments because as parents, we try to believe in healing. From that, she lost mobility. We were once more at the Citadel. Despite all that, my daughter kept her spirits up. The doctors thought that last December, she would no longer be there, and she decided to stop the chemo. We still believed in it until two weeks ago when she had a seizure. The disease had resumed in the cerebellum. “

After new examinations, the doctors announce to the family that there is no longer any hope, but still suggest that the young girl resume chemo. “Nenette replied that it was out of the question and she didn’t want to do anything anymore. She wanted to be euthanized and donate her organs. We weren’t even aware with her mom. We were surprised, but ultimately, not surprised.”

“She waited until she was 16”

Nenette, always listening, liked to please those around her. She was very popular with everyone, including the primary school in Wibrin. Of his generosity, no one doubted. Proof of this is with the decision she made just a few days ago.

“She had just celebrated her 16th birthday, she wanted to wait until she had them before being euthanized, says her dad once more. And she hung on to get there because she wanted to see all her relatives once more.”

The week following her birthday, Nenette does not feel well. “We brought the family back, adds her dad. We then informed the doctor, Nenette was determined. Before performing the medical procedure, she smiled, she spoke. She did not flinch. At 9 p.m., we said goodbye and she left in a serene way. She was surrounded by an extraordinary medical team.

Strong in her courage, Nenette wanted to donate her organs.

“She also decided to donate her cerebellum to medicine to advance research on the disease. This is a first in Belgium”, ends her dad, sad but proud.

Nenette’s funeral will be held this Wednesday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at the church in Wibrin.
