Giovanni Cafaro, a 47-year-old Belgian from Maasmechelen, is shocked by what he saw in the Dilsen-Stokkem canal. According to information from HLN, the forty-year-old saw a dog owner throw… a Maltese into the canal!
While busy fishing with Nick, a 57-year-old friend of his, and his wife Phayom, 40, Giovanni suddenly saw the man throw the dog into the water. “During the first attempt, the man accidentally threw the animal once morest an iron pillar of the bridge, and the dog started howling,” explains the Belgian to our colleagues. “At that point, I immediately started yelling at the owner. The man then appeared to put his dog back in his car, and I jumped in my car to chase him,” Giovanni further explains.

“By the time I got into my car, the man had already thrown the animal into the water. Meanwhile, he was crossing the bridge towards his house at 140 km/h,” he continues. But Giovanni managed to chase the man home. “On the way, I had already informed the police and transmitted his license plate number,” adds the forty-year-old.
Once he arrived at the man’s house, Giovanni ran towards him. “He denied what had happened and asked me to go out,” he explains. “I then immediately took the road towards the bridge to see if the dog had survived the fall,” adds Giovanni. Nick, present on site, explains that he did not “see the dog come to the surface”. “We thought maybe the owner had tied a stone around the dog and the animal had drowned in the meantime,” he explains. But following a while, his wife Phayom saw the animal on the surface of the water once more and dived straight in to save it. “With Giovanni, we took Phayom and the dog out of the canal,” Nick explains. “There we dried him off and tried to calm him down a little, because he was shaking with fear,” he adds.
Since the terrible incident, the Maltese has been taken in by the non-profit organization “Animals in Nood” in Ophoven. It was found that the animal had been the victim of serious neglect. Concerning the owner, thanks to Giovanni’s description, the police were able to quickly identify the culprit and issue an arrest warrant. He risks a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of 800,000 euros.
