2024 is a special year for desert rock legend Brant Bjork. After 18 years, his own label, Duna Records, celebrates his return with a remarkable album. this Brent Bjork TrioThe album also features Björk’s long-time associate Mario Lalli on bass, and Ryan Güt from his solo band on drums, which can also be heard on the record now. Not surprising service “Once Upon a Time in the Desert” This is exactly what one would expect from this brilliant actor.
“UR Free” opens with a delicious riff that quickly makes it clear what you can expect from this record. Björk breaks away from typical desert melodies, adding official rock influences and adding some blues vibes. The powerful and slightly planned vocals certainly know how to entertain, while the rhythm section delivers a frantic performance. The sound gets louder in the second half as the instruments take over and give the groove the necessary heaviness. “Backin’ The Daze” that follows is classic, even free-spirited, with a Hendrix touch, but never lets you forget who was involved – a fun, punchy digression.
There are several of them, but the particularly long “The Sunshine Is Making Love to Your Mind” certainly deserves special attention. Lalli’s bass rumble has rarely looked so naughty, the subtle Stoner influence coming through nicely, while Bjork directs the action as the ring boss, always shaking out a few lines and guiding this jam-like track through several A small change with a psychedelic undertone. In comparison, “Do You Got Some Fire” seems almost linear, but also oppressive and metallic. The sheer power of the mini-choir and the wistful solo that follows is convincing. Down The Mountain, on the other hand, brings back blues, desert and stoner music and puts its stamp on it.
Ultimately – and unsurprisingly – it performs almost exactly as you’d expect from the musicians involved. As a trio, you’re somewhat immersed in the work of Bjork’s solo band while still pushing in different directions, especially blues and classic rock. Once Upon a Time in the Desert is a testament to blind understanding and vast experience, but also to an unquenchable passion for music that, even after more than 35 years, seems undiminished. The Brant Bjork Trio is the latest exciting project from the desert, where you can let go and lose yourself in the best possible way.
