Brandon Woodruff Signs Two-Year Deal to Stay with Brewers, Recovery from Shoulder Surgery

Free agent right-hander Brandon Woodruff will remain with the Brewers, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Monday. The team has not confirmed the deal, which according to MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman is for two years. Woodruff, who underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder in October, is expected to miss most or all of the 2024 season.

Woodruff spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with the Brewers, during which he posted a 3.10 ERA in 130 games (115 starts), the best in the franchise for pitchers who worked at least 500 innings in a Milwaukee uniform. .

Woodruff, whom the Brewers selected in the 11th round of the 2014 draft, had established himself as one of the best starters in all of baseball. But after an injury-shortened 2023 season, he underwent surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder, which could keep him out of action until 2025. After the 2023 season ended, Milwaukee did not offer him a contract. 30-year-old player, making him a free agent.

Only time will tell if Woodruff will be the same pitcher he was before undergoing surgery. But if he is, he will be 31 or 32 when he returns to the mound, depending on the length of his recovery, even at a point in his career when he should be able to pitch at a high level for many years to come.

Only seven pitchers (minimum 600 innings) since Woodruff debuted in the major leagues have an ERA better than his 3.10 in that period. If his return performance is anywhere close to what he’s done so far, this signing could go down as one of the best moves in recent history.
