Braine-l’Alleud Budget 2024: Tax Reduction and Community Investments

2023-12-14 17:02:00

Life is good in Braine-l’Alleud, boasts mayor Vincent Scourneau (MR). With the president of the CPAS, Pierre Lambrette (MR), also in charge of the Budget, they presented this Thursday the budget for the year 2024, which will be put to the vote during the municipal council this Monday, December 18.

The most important announcement is the reduction in personal income tax (IPP). This will increase, for next year, to 5.5%. A decrease of 0.2% compared to 2023. Already in 2022, the PPI had been reduced, going from 5.9% to 5.5. “The Brainois pay less but we don’t get anything. There is nothing lost, and we are even increasing certain points, such as the bicycle bonus”, welcomes the mayor, even presenting Braine-l’Alleud as “the Walloon miracle” or even “the least taxed municipality on the work in Wallonia”. As for the property tax (PRI), it remains unchanged, namely 1,730 additional centimes. Namely slightly higher than the PRI of the neighboring commune, Waterloo (1,700), but where the PPI is higher (5.7%).

A reduction to almost a million euros

By reducing the PPI by 0.2%, the municipality loses almost a million euros in additional income. But Braine-l’Alleud can afford it thanks to different elements, Pierre Lambrette explains to us.

Initially, the municipality made savings, whether in public lighting or the installation of 476 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the municipal administration. Which represents a gain of almost 500,000 euros per year. In addition to these panels on the roof of the town hall, there are those present on the site of the old sand pit: ultimately, they should bring in 450,000 to 500,000 euros per year, estimates the president of the CPAS.

The recovery of VAT from the autonomous municipal sports authority and the economies of scale with the synergy between the municipality and the CPAS also made it possible to put butter in the brainois spinach: “with this, we have the margin to reduce the charges and pass it on to citizens”.

This budget also plans to strengthen the allocation to the police zone by 70,000 euros, which will then reach 6 million euros.
