The cosmetic surgery operation at 18,000 pounds (21,257.91 euros) by Beata Filipek, 57, turned into a disaster in Poland. She was supposed to have a dental operation, but not everything went as planned. The 50-year-old was given fentanyl during the procedure and it caused a bad reaction, leading to major brain damage.
Beata had to be placed in a coma when she came for teeth surgery as she suffered from bone loss in her lower jaw. So she wanted to have implants put in to maintain her appearance. According to information from The Sun, Beata texted her aunt to let her know she was going into the OR and might pick her up 3.5 hours later.
But 19 hours later, when she had no news, Beata’s aunt ended up going to the hospital. It was a shock for her, seeing her unconscious niece with a respiratory mask.
Beata was transferred to an intensive care unit at another hospital and a few days later her sister Dagmara came to join her. “I entered the doctor’s office under the pretext that I was a patient. They took me upstairs, the doctor closed the door and I admitted that I was Beata’s sister. He was very scared and said, ‘I really don’t know what happened, but his blood pressure started to go down,’ Dagmara said.

“It was very difficult to pull out the teeth. I even stopped doing the procedure because I felt something was wrong. I ordered rapid recovery from anesthesia,” the doctor explained. The anesthesiologist explained to Dagmara that he did not know what had happened, “but she had convulsions”. Dagmara’s sister only had three teeth removed and therefore did not have implants because the doctor did not have time to insert them.
The MRI then revealed that Beata had suffered irreversible damage to the brain and cerebral cortex. Ellie Mae Fitgerald, Beata’s 26-year-old stepdaughter, is devastated. “I told our three children that their grandmother would never recover from her injuries. We all have to fly to Poland next week to say our goodbyes,” says the young woman.
Brain dead, Beata will never recover. “She was so fit and healthy before this operation. We need answers regarding what went so wrong. Apparently she was given fentanyl and she reacted,” adds Beata’s daughter-in-law.
