The film “Brahmastra – Part 1: Shiva” won a host of awards as the “Oscars” ceremony for Indian cinema kicked off in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Superstar Shreya Ghoshal took home the Best Playback Female Singer award for her role in this romantic epic, which won the Best Music Direction and Best Lyrics awards.

The show, full of flashy dancing, is being held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, where Indians make up a third of its population, for the second year in a row.

The green carpet, which was approved in 2007 in support of environmental protection, has been walked on in the past by some of Bollywood’s biggest names, including Abhishek Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan.

“What does this celebration mean for (Indian) cinema? I think opening up to the world stage and also taking us to the world stage, so it’s exciting either way,” said actress Jacqueline Fernandez, wearing an Arabic-inspired headdress.

The Indian film industry had an output of $2.5 billion in 2019. India also exports hundreds of films each year in its more than 20 other official languages.

India, with a population of more than 1.4 billion, produces about 1,600 films annually, more than any other country in the world.

But Bollywood, the world’s most prolific film producer, has been mired in crisis since the Covid pandemic, with ticket sales still declining since cinemas reopened.

It also faces competition from foreign broadcasters and other Indian films produced far from Bombay, the metropolis from which the word Bollywood is derived.

But the success of “Pathan” starring Shahrukh Khan, which broke all records at the Indian box office earlier this year, raises hopes of a return to the successes of popular Bollywood films.

Previously, India’s Oscars have been held in other locations around the world including London, Madrid, Johannesburg and Singapore, reflecting Bollywood’s broad appeal.
