After mild temperatures: cold weather is coming at the weekend: snow also in the lowlands

The mild temperatures will be replaced by a cold front from the weekend onwards, and the snowfall line will drop rapidly. Snow is also possible in the lowlands from Sunday.

In the lowlands, however, there shouldn’t be too much; the landscape is rather “slightly sugary”. Pictured: Zurich in January 2023.

On the other hand, there is a lot of fresh snow for the ski areas – up to 50 centimeters. In the picture: Start of the season in Engelberg OW in December.

That’s what it’s regarding

  • War is declared on the mild temperatures: it will be very cold from the weekend onwards.

  • There will also be fresh snow in the lowlands.

  • In addition, the Bise ensures that we get quite cold.

“Yesterday’s snow”, or rather the day before yesterday, is the winter magic that transformed the whole of Switzerland into a powdery white romantic fairy tale at the beginning of December. At the moment, at least in the lowlands, we have to make do with a lot of wind, rain and a gray on gray – and with temperatures that are far too mild for this time of year.

But as we get closer to the weekend, this will probably come to an end. Because from Friday it will be continuously colder: “From the weekend, Switzerland will be between a low over the Adriatic and a high pressure zone over Northern Europe. In the deeper layers the wind first turns to the north and later to the northeast. This means that cold air is increasingly reaching Switzerland,” it says SRF.

Snow line is falling rapidly

On Friday evening, the snowfall limit in the north drops from 1,750 to 1,000 meters over the course of the day, “over the course of Saturday from around 700 meters to the evening or then into the lowlands during the night of Sunday,” says Michael Eichmann from MeteoNews. And that’s not all: From Sunday itself there might also be snow in the lowlands, as it is getting steadily colder. Exactly how much new snow will fall is still unclear. According to Eichmann, there won’t be much in the lowlands in terms of quantity: “But over the weekend you will see flakes quite widely and also a slightly sugary landscape.”

Anyone who has already taken out their transitional jacket in the last few, relatively mild days should be warned: the temperatures will be well below freezing, especially in the coming week – at least in the first half of the week – and between minus three and minus one degrees during the day. In addition, the so-called wind chill effect, coupled with a noticeable breeze, increases the feeling of cold. “It will feel quite uncomfortable,” said meteorologist Eichmann.

Ski resorts have something to look forward to

Back to the snow: Even if large amounts are not expected in the lowlands, the situation in the mountain regions and thus also in the ski areas is likely to be different. “There will be 30 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow across the entire period until the beginning of next week. So the deeper ski areas can also look forward to some fresh snow,” explains the weather expert.

And what regarding following the cold days? The temperatures will probably rise slightly once more in the middle of next week, but it won’t be as mild as it is now.
