BPS Records 680 Thousand People Decrease in Poor Population in Indonesia – 2024-07-05 08:36:13

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that there was a decrease in the number of poor people by 680 thousand people in Indonesia over a year. In March 2024, the percentage of poor people was 9.03% or 25.22 million people.

“The poverty rate during this period decreased by 0.33% compared to March 2023, which was 25.90 million people,” said Acting Main Secretary of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Imam Machdi in a press conference, Monday (1/7).

Imam added that the number of poor people in the country had increased during the pandemic, namely in 2022 with a total of 26.36 million poor people. However, the poverty rate gradually decreased in March 2023 and March this year.

Furthermore, BPS noted that the poverty disparity between urban and rural areas is still quite wide. In March 2024, the poverty rate in rural areas reached 11.79%, while in urban areas it was only 7.9%.

In general, poverty reduction occurred in all regions in Indonesia with the highest reduction occurring in Bali and Nusa Tenggara. There was a 0.57% decrease from 13.29 million people in March 2023 to 12.72 million people in March 2024.

However, in March 2024, the population was still concentrated in Java and Sumatra with the number of poor people being 13.24 million and 5.55 million people respectively.

Then, in March 2024, BPS also noted that three provinces experienced an increase in poverty rates compared to March 2023, namely West Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, and the Bangka Belitung Islands.

Imam explained that the poverty line in March 2024 was IDR 582,932 or an increase of 5.9% compared to March 2023. In March 2024, the urban poverty line was IDR 601,871 or higher than the rural poverty line, which was IDR 556,874. (Z-11)
