The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the level of expenditure inequality or Gini ratio in March 2024 was 0.379. This figure decreased by 0.009 points compared to the March 2023 Gini ratio of 0.388.
Acting Secretary of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Imam Machdi explained that the level of expenditure inequality in urban areas is greater than in rural areas. The Gini ratio in urban areas in March 2024 was recorded at 0.399, down from 0.409 in March 2023. The Gini ratio in rural areas in March 2024 was recorded at 0.306, down from 0.313 in March 2023.
“The level of inequality has decreased by around 0.027 points in the last 10 years. Inequality in urban areas is higher but has decreased faster than in rural areas,” said Imam.
Based on the World Bank’s inequality measure, the distribution of expenditure in the bottom 40% of the population is 18.40%. This means that population expenditure in March 2024 is in the low inequality category. If detailed by region, in urban areas the figure is recorded at 17.41% and in rural areas 21.39%.
In March 2024, the province with the highest gini ratio was the Special Region of Yogyakarta with 0.435. The province with the lowest gini ratio was recorded in the Bangka Belitung Islands with 0.244.
When compared to the national gini ratio of 0.379, there are seven provinces with higher gini ratios, namely the Special Region of Yogyakarta (0.435), DKI Jakarta (0.423), West Java (0.421), Gorontalo (0.414), South Papua (0.404), West Papua (0.389), and Central Papua (0.381). (Z-2)
