Bpost, half of whose capital is in the hands of the Belgian State, is suspected of illegal agreements and forgery in writing within the framework of the market for the distribution of newspapers and periodicals. Last October, the company revealed that it had carried out a “compliance review” concerning its concession for the distribution of newspapers, a review which would have revealed possible embezzlement around this contract, in the form of collusion between bpost and publishers. The case notably led to the resignation in December of the former CEO, Dirk Tirez.

The organization of booksellers Perstablo is following these developments closely, having for years denounced the public subsidies granted for the distribution of newspapers and periodicals. These subsidies are described as “unfair competition” which “economically damages” bookstores.

Recent revelations have the sector organization wondering whether it can obtain financial compensation.
