Get ready to see Tesla Superchargers where you least expected them. Indeed, BP has just announced an investment of $100 million to purchase Superchargers and use them on its BP Pulse fast charging network.

The Tesla Supercharger network is often highlighted for two things: its ease of use and its reliability. The energy giant BP is not mistaken, since rather than doing like Ionity, Totalenergies or Fastned which obtain terminals from various manufacturers, it has decided to order charging stations directly from Tesla.

A juicy new business for Tesla

Elon Musk’s firm has just found a new source of income, and is potentially preparing to enter a new era: that of the sale of Superchargers. A factory dedicated to the manufacture of Superchargers already exists in China and the United States, but for the moment, these two gigafactories did not offer their services to other brands.

Indeed, with the rapid expansion of the Tesla Supercharger network, the entire production of terminals was dedicated to the brand. Today we learn through a press release from the English firm BP that Superchargers will be purchased to strengthen the BP pulse charging network.

BP makes it clear that this is the first time Superchargers are purchased for a network other than that of Tesla. This therefore marks Tesla’s entry into the world of fast charger sellers.

A breakthrough for all electric car drivers

One of the downsides of fast charging at the moment remains the reliability of the terminals. Everyone unanimously recognizes that Tesla Superchargers are the standard meter in 2023 with regard to roaming charging, which easily explains BP’s choice.

It is likely that other players, who currently source elsewhere, will follow suit if the prices charged by Tesla are competitive. The director of charging infrastructure at Tesla said: “ At Tesla, we are committed to providing great charging experiences for all electric vehicle owners. The sale of our fast charging hardware is another milestone for us, which we are looking to expand to support our mission to accelerate the global transition to sustainable energy. We appreciate BP’s partnership in this area – it’s a good step towards a more sustainable future.”

It is possible that as early as next year, you will come across BP-branded Tesla Superchargers in the USA, and little by little elsewhere in the world. These special Superchargers will feature NACS connectors and the famous Magic Dock for vehicles equipped with a CCS port. In Europe, the CCS port would be sufficient given that we no longer have multiple fast charging standards.
