Boycott Delhaize Campaign: Join the Solidarity Challenge at Esperenzah Festival

At the bars, in the toilets, at the card charging stations and near the stages, the Boycott Delhaize posters have taken up residence at the Abbaye de Floreffe. “The goal is to spread the info to each place of the festival”, indicates Éric Breugelmans, delegate CNE (National Central of Employees). With his colleague Maria Lucentini, this employee of a Delhaize store near Liège made the trip from the Ardent City to awaken the public of Esperenzah! to the stakes of their fight. “It’s a multicultural place, with a large panel of festival-goers, which allows us to convey an important message, but also to see if our actions are clearly perceived by the public”, he explains.

As a reminder, since March 7, 2023, a social conflict has affected Delhaize supermarkets. The group intends to franchise 128 of its own stores. A project contested by a large part of the staff who now invites customers to boycott the brand. “This boycott is necessary, argues Éric Breugelmans. In Sweden, McDonald’s wanted to ban the collective representation of workers. This representation was finally saved, after a call for a boycott followed by the population.”

The “solidarity challenge of the summer”

In anticipation of the works council on August 7, a Boycott Delhaize campaign has therefore been launched by the CNE. It takes the form of posters inviting citizens to follow the “solidarity challenge of summer”: that of melting like snow in the sun the shopping carts of the lion sign. These posters have been plastered all over the Esperanzah website! and inevitably appeal to festival-goers, who came to support Éric Breugelmans and Maria Lucentini as they strolled through the alleys of the abbey.

A stand also offers festival-goers the chance to have their t-shirts engraved with the words Boycott Delhaize.

Finally, throughout the weekend, debates led by workers from the group are organized in a barn transformed into a conference room. Followed by about twenty curious people, the first session took place this Friday, at 6 p.m., in the presence of Éric Breugelmans and Maria Lucentini. “A person present in the room did not know our case at all. Hence the interest of our coming here.” Two other meetings will take place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. They will each time be provided by different interlocutors.

Note that debates and workshops around big pharma, pesticides or consent will also take place during the festival.
