Tragic scenes in South Africa
Boxer dies following “fight with invisible opponent”
Tragic scenes take place during a boxing match in South Africa. A boxer repeatedly punches into space and dies a few days later in the hospital.
South African boxer Simiso Buthelezi is in the ring in Durban on Sunday for a title fight. In the 10th round, he receives a violent uppercut from his opponent, bangs on one of the ring ropes, but stays on his feet. But the blow has terrible consequences.
Buthelezi then runs towards the referee instead of his opponent. When the referee avoids him, the boxer doesn’t react a bit. Instead, he raises his fists and throws punches – into the void!
It looks like he’s hitting an invisible opponent, then he also punches the corner cushion. His opponent doesn’t know what’s going on, the referee stops the fight immediately.
Internal bleeding leads to death
The South African is immediately taken to the hospital. A brain injury was diagnosed there and the boxer was placed in a coma.
On Wednesday, doctors reported that he died from “internal bleeding” that was the result of the brain injury. He probably got it during the fight. However, the South African Boxing Association said in a statement that the exact cause of death would be further investigated.
“It is with great sadness that the Buthelezi family and the boxing association announce that Simiso Buthelezi has passed away in Durban hospital,” the statement said. “The family wishes they would be given their peace of mind as they mourn the loss of this great boxer, who has always been a role model outside of the ring.” (che)
