“Super Mario Bros, the movie” continues to dominate the North American box office and reached a billion dollars in revenue worldwide, a first this year, according to estimates on Sunday by the specialized firm Exhibitor Relations.

The animated film inspired by the game of the same name, produced by Universal, Nintendo and Illumination studios, made this weekend in Canada and the United States 40 million dollars in revenue, thus remaining at the top of the ranking.

Since its Easter weekend release, the animated film has racked up more than $490 million in North America and another $532 million across the rest of the world, according to Exhibitor, for a worldwide total of $1.02 billion in four weeks.

It is the first feature film to exceed this threshold this year, and only the 10th animated film, according to the specialized magazine The Hollywood reporter.

The plumber in dungarees and mustache is ahead at the North American box office of Warner Bros. horror film “Evil Dead Rise”, which for its second weekend in North American theaters recorded $ 12.2 million in receipts.

Actresses Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star in this bloodbath, playing two sisters who must battle a slew of demonic creatures.

In third place with 6.8 million is a newcomer: “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret”, a dramatic comedy about adolescence, adapted from a classic of children’s literature by author Judy Blume. “A good start” for such a film, analyzes expert David Gross, noting “dithyrambic reviews and reactions from spectators”.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” is still doing well after six weeks of operation, in fourth place with $5 million. In this new chapter of the hit saga, Keanu Reeves reprises his role as a hitman fighting an international criminal group.

Here’s the rest of the top 10:

6. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Thieves” ($4.1 million)

7. “Air” (4 millions)

8. “Ponniyin Selvan partie 2” (3.7 million)
