Box Office Analysis: June 2023 Numbers and Impact on 2023 Film Industry

Admittedly, the 2023 box office has been a shadow of what we’ve seen in the past. “Flop” seems to be everywhere, and The Flash seems to take the biggest crown of them all. But how much did the box office drop? In the UK, data collected by Comscore (thank you, Variety) shows a 28% drop in June 2023 compared to June 2022, despite seeing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Flash, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny both premiered within a month. It should be said that Across the Spider-Verse did its best to stop the bleeding, taking in £26.7m across the UK, some £15m more than its predecessors combined. As for which films accounted for the rest, The Little Mermaid accounted for £25.4m (despite actually opening in late May), while Indy 5 managed to pull in £10.1m. The Flash accounted for just £8.3m for the entire month, with Transformers adding another £7.4m to that total. Since July is a big month at the box office, with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer, Elemental, Barbie and more all making their debuts, we’ll have to see if the end-of-July revenue drop story will be similar.
