A 45-year-old man has died following his symptoms, initially thought to be irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion, were found to be caused by bowel cancer.

When Asa Turley first started feeling unwell in 2022, doctors ignored his symptoms, believing he was too young for the condition to be serious.

It was only following his illness became severe at home that a deadly tumor was discovered, and now his family is sharing his story in the hope of urging others to seek treatment if they know something is wrong.

His partner, Saffron Loki, narrated the ordeal that Asa went through.

Saffron said: “The thing is, Asa is one of those people who won’t go to see a doctor. Asa was told it mightn’t be serious because he was so young. My mum and I started wondering if he might have bowel cancer.

Saffron, 38, remembers Asa’s symptoms.

She said: “Asa was showing signs of bowel cancer, I know this doesn’t sound very nice, but Asa smelled like poo, he was losing weight and had diarrhoea, which are all signs.

Saffron found him collapsed on the sofa in their home in January last year, and was taken to hospital, where tests were finally carried out.

She said: “It was the morning of January 5, and Asa woke up and went downstairs. I got up shortly following and went into the living room and found Asa exhausted and unresponsive, and covered in vomit, on the couch. I called an ambulance immediately, and the paramedics took him to the hospital.”

Saffron was then able to talk to the hospital doctor regarding how bad Asa’s condition had been over the past eight months.

A CT scan confirmed that Asa, from Churchdown in Gloucestershire, had bowel cancer, and the next day he was taken into surgery to remove the tumor, and also underwent chemotherapy. However, a scan a few months later revealed that the cancer had spread to the peritoneum.

To try to address this problem, he underwent immunotherapy every two weeks.

Although this worked for a while, Asa was told in December that the disease had returned, he had developed small tumors in the stomach area, and immunotherapy was no longer working.

Asa died peacefully of secondary cancer on March 21, leaving behind two children and eight children.

According to the NHS, symptoms of bowel cancer can include:

Changes in your stool, such as softer stools, diarrhea or constipation that are unusual for you

The need to defecate more or less than is usual for you

The presence of blood in your stool, which may appear red or black

Bleeding from your ass

You often feel the need to defecate, even if you have just gone to the toilet

Abdominal pain

A lump in your abdomen

Bloating

Lose weight without trying

Feeling very tired for no reason.
