APL is the contraction of American President Line, a formerly American armament in its own right. APL was then bought by the Singaporean company Neptune Orient Line – NOL – which kept the original brand.
Then the French group CMA CGM took over the commercial lines, as well as all the ships owned by NOL-APL, including a series of ten container ships of 13,892 teu. Shortly following, eight of this series were sent to a shipyard to undergo “jumboisation”. This process consists of cut the ship in half lengthwise to add a stretch previously built in order to increase its loading capacity.
Extended by 30 meters
As a result of the work, the initial length of theSingapore APP which was 368.50 meters has changed to 397.56 meters and her capacity was increased to 17,292 teu. During this conversion, the accommodation block was raised by two floors left completely empty, in order to increase the number of container planes and therefore its capacity (one plane equals one container floor).
Its engine, now equipped with a scrubber – a smoke washing system, hence its enormous chimney – is made up of a MAN-B&W slow diesel with 11 cylinders of 62,030 Kw (84,360 hp). Like all those in the series, theSingapore APP came out of the South Korean yard Hyundai HI in 2013.
