In Vietnam, the city of Ho Chi Minh has just recorded two cases of young children suspected of having been poisoned with botulinum toxin following an end-of-year party.

According to the deputy head of the Ho Chi Minh City Health Department office, following the Tet holiday, the city health department received a report from Children’s Hospital No. 2 regarding two cases of pediatric patients suspected of botulinum toxin poisoning, admitted to hospital on February 6 and 7. The two patients suspected of botulinum toxin poisoning had eaten at a family end-of-year celebration in the Phuoc Long B district of Thu Duc town, Ho Chi Minh City.

An epidemiological investigation revealed that 7 people (2 families) had participated in this end-of-year celebration. Among them, only two children showed symptoms of poisoning. All of the food at the meal had been purchased at the market and participants did not clearly remember the seller.

After a clinical examination, CT scan, brain MRI, electromyography and other necessary tests, doctors at Children’s Hospital 2 consulted the child and might not rule out botulinum poisoning.

Currently, the condition of these two children has improved. One of them was disconnected from the respirator and is being monitored in the gastroenterology department of Children’s Hospital No. 2. The other patient continues to be treated and monitored in the gastroenterology department of Children’s Hospital 2.

The hospital had collected stool samples from the patient and sent them to the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health for testing and diagnosis. At this time, test results are not available. Additionally, the city health department has yet to discover any other cases in the Thu Duc area with similar symptoms.
