If it is not an actor in the parade program, the Italian Bottega Veneta is still present during this week of men’s fashion in Paris. The Kering group brand announces a collaboration with the Parisian collective Air Afrique to support the new publication of its magazine. This one, inspired by pan-African magazines of the 20th century, was launched on Friday, June 23, 2023, during an event at the Center Pompidou.

One of the magazine – Air Afrique

Published in French and English, the media is inspired by the creative and cultural vision of the airline Air Afrique and its former in-flight magazine ‘Balafon’, which celebrated the cultural diversity of the African continent. Air Afrique combines this philosophy with a sharp aesthetic to transmit the African cultural heritage and inspire “creativity and cross-border discussions”.

“Our mission is to preserve this heritage, to place Air Afrique back in the cultural debate and to draw inspiration from its example of cultural commitment. Air Afrique was more than an airline. It was a cultural platform,” says Djiby Kebe, co-founder of Air Afrique. “We want to share Air Afrique’s archives and create our own archives, in order to capture this moment of change in the awareness and expression of Black people”, he continues.

Each issue of the magazine will include both archival documents from the airline and works by French, Caribbean and African artists and writers.

For the occasion, Bottega Veneta will make its brand and platforms available. She will organize events for the launch of the magazine to bring together a community of engaged readers. The brand will also launch a series of limited edition blankets by Franco-Sudanese artist Abdel El Tayeb, designer at the Bottega Veneta studio.

The Air Afrique collective, which was initiated by founders Lamine Diaoune, Djiby Kebe and Jeremy Konko, bears the name of the pan-African airline, which was operational between 1961 and 2002.
