The McLaren team will take 12 points from the opening race of this season’s Formula 1, with Lando Norris finishing sixth and Oscar Piastri eighth in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The pair of McLaren drivers started the race at the Sachír circuit from the fourth row. In the third lap, Norris got ahead of Fernando Alonso for sixth place, on which he then spent most of the race, finishing in the grip of two Mercedes.

“It was a tough race but we had good speed in it and it was a good race. It’s definitely an improvement over last year, so as a team we can be happy,” Norris said.

“I think the wind hurt us a little bit today. It changed from the previous days and it was a lot worse in some corners, but we moved forward and that was the best we might have hoped for today. A good start to the year.’

Piastri remained in the same position

Oscar Piastri also finished the race in Bahrain in the same position he started on. He evaluates the first business of the season positively.

“I started the year in eighth place. Personally, I think it was a good race for me and our race speed seemed good. A few things to improve on, but overall it wasn’t a bad race for us when you look at where we were at this time last year,” Piastri said.
