WASHINGTON, D.C.. — No. 11 seed Boston College forced #3 seeded Virginia into overtime, falling 66-60 in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 ACC Tournament on Thursday night.
Quinten Post led all players with 23 points and 13 rebounds in 42 minutes. Post was 9-of-20 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Claudell Harris Jr. also tallied double digits, finishing with 14 points to go along with four boards and three assists.
Tied at 53-53 with 5:48 to play, Boston College held Virginia without a field goal for the remainder of regulation. The Cavaliers visited the foul line 10 times down that stretch, taking a two point lead – 57-55 – with under 30 seconds remaining. Mason Madsen hit a deep 2-point jumper through a ton of contact to force the extra period.
Madsen finished the game with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and two blocked shots. Devin McGlockton finished with seven points and eight rebounds before fouling out in 29 minutes. Jaeden Zackery, playing with a strained foot, played 40 of the 45 minutes and finished with five points, four rebounds, five assists, and a steal.
FIRST HALF
- The Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead, thanks to the hot shooting hand of Claudell Harris Jr. Harris drilled his first three 3-point attempts of the night.
- Quinten Post extended the perimeter attack, hitting his first 3-ball of the night to put BC up 14-4 with 15:11 to go
- A 7-0 run got the Cavs back within three – at 18-15 – but back-to-back jumpers from Madsen and Hand pushed the BC lead back to seven – 22-15 with 8:30 left
- Virginia took its first lead of the night – 23-22 – with four minutes left, following eight unanswered points
- Madsen would once more respond with two run-killing buckets, drilling a 3-pointer on the left wing and a layup following a fight for a loose ball
- The Eagles would close the final two and half minutes on an 8-3 push, taking a 35-29 lead at the break
- BC connected on 48.3% (14-29) of its shots during the first 20:00 of play, including 6-of-13 from the perimeter.
SECOND HALF
- Virginia used an 8-2 push to start the second half, tying it at 37-37 before a Post 3-pointer gave BC the lead right back
- A McGlockton layup would give BC a five-point edge – 44-39 with 14:19 to play – before the Eagles went without a FG for nearly four minutes. UVA would regain a 47-46 lead during that stretch.
- Post would tally five straight points – a 3-pointer set up by a great offensive board by Prince Aligbe and a layup – putting BC up 51-47 with 8:32 to go.
- The game was tied at 55-55 with 1:37 to play and BC called timeout
- There were six more scoreless possessions until Madsen was whistled for a foul with 29 seconds left while going for a rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Zackery.
- UVA hit both free throws to go up two, but Madsen forced overtime on a long 2-pointer out of a scrum with a ton of contact.
OVERTIME
- UVA began the extra frame by connecting on a deep 3-pointer and took a six point lead – 63-57 – with under two minutes left following another deep ball on a broken play.
- Harris would halve the deficit with a 3-pointer with under a minute to go but the Eagles would get no closer
NOTES
- Quinten Post logged his 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two assists, two blocks, and a steal
- He finished this ACC Tournament with 64 points and 34 rebounds over the three games
- The last two players to have 60+ points and 30+ rebounds in an ACC Tournament – Jayson Tatum (Duke) in 2017 and Zion Williamson (Duke) in 2019.
- Virginia caught a break from the foul line tonight, finishing with a +14 advantage in attempts. The Cavs attempted 18 free throws to just four for the Eagles in a physical 45 minutes
- 12 of those 18 FT attempts for UVA came during the final six minutes of regulation and overtime, when the game was tied at 53-53.
