BOSTON — Tyler Wells gave up two hits in six straight innings and the Baltimore Orioles got early homers from Ryan Mountcastle and Ramon Urias to beat the Boston Red Sox 10-0 on Monday night.
Anthony Santander sealed Baltimore’s third victory in the five-game series with a three-run homer in the ninth inning.
The Red Sox, who had 9 wins in 12 games, had won their previous four series, but this time they held off the bat for the third time this season and finished with four hits.
Wells (2-4) struck out three and tied for the longest performance of his six-inning career. He allowed just a single to Trevor Story in the second inning and a double to Xander Bogaerts in the fourth.
Story also walked in the fifth, but Wells didn’t allow another runner before Dillon Tate replaced him.
The pitcher had also pitched six innings on May 9 once morest Kansas City, his only previous major league win.
Wells outpointed Boston’s experienced Rich Hill (2-2), who struggled early on following hitting Austin Hayes on the third pitch of the night; then Trey Mancini hit him with a 3-pointer that bounced awkwardly between left-center field that caught Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández by surprise.
For the Red Sox, Puerto Ricans Enrique Hernández 4-0 and Christian Vázquez 3-1. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 3-0 and Franchy Cordero 3-0.
For the Orioles, Mexican Ramón Urías 5-1, one run scored, three RBIs. The Venezuelan Anthony Santander 4-1, one scored, four produced. Dominican Jorge Mateo 4-2.
