The convenience store landscape is changing. This is due to the increase in the number of people in their 20s starting their own business right following graduating from school due to the cold wave of employment, and the number of older people who want jobs even following their 60s has increased.

According to GS Retail on the 17th, the proportion of new convenience store GS25 franchise owners this year reached 19.1% in the first to third quarters. If the current trend continues, the proportion of new franchise owners in their 20s is expected to exceed 20% on an annual basis for the first time in history. This means that the owner of one of the five newly opened convenience stores is in his 20s. The proportion of people in their 20s among new franchise owners was only 12.9% in 2020, but it exceeded 15% last year and is continuing to rise. The proportion of ‘current’ convenience store owners in their 20s also rose from 12.8% in 2020 to 14.9% in the third quarter of this year.
