Borussia Dortmund’s 2024 Undefeated Journey and Loss: Nico Schlotterbeck Suspended

Borussia Dortmund will remain undefeated in 2024! After six Bundesliga games with four wins each, there is no defeat for BVB in the Champions League.

The first leg of the round of 16 between Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven ended in a 1-1 draw. Not a bad, but not a good starting position for the second leg at Signal-Iduna-Park. However, there is other bitter news for BVB to cope with.

Borussia Dortmund suffers a heavy loss

Things should continue as usual for Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 season: head coach Edin Terzic’s team disappoints time and again in the Bundesliga, but things should be successful for BVB in the Champions League. The Black and Yellows initially emerged as group winners in a fantastic group against Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle United.

PSV Eindhoven should also be defeated in the round of 16. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Revierklub is hoping for its own support and home strength at Signal-Iduna-Park. Dortmund have their sights firmly set on the quarter-finals. But there is bitter news for the second leg.

Nico Schlotterbeck will not be part of the game. Shortly before the half-time whistle there was bitter news for Dortmund: the defender received his third yellow card in the current competition and is therefore suspended.

Without Schlotterbeck in the second leg

How important Schlotterbeck is for Borussia Dortmund? The central defender only missed the start of the Bundesliga season against 1. FC Köln (1-0) this season. Otherwise, he was always on the pitch and was an absolute top performer for the Black and Yellows in defence. He played 30 games. He was only not in the starting line-up in two of them.

More news for you:

Terzic in particular was recently happy about how Schlotterbeck harmonized with Niklas Süle in central defense. To make matters worse, Süle was out shortly before the first leg due to a cold. He had to be replaced by Mats Hummels, who did a good job, but then was out of his mind during one scene (more on that here).
