The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Affairs, Josep Borrell, spoke this Monday with the presidential candidate of the majority opposition in Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia, about the need to verify the minutes of the elections of July 28.

“In conversation with Edmundo González, I have reaffirmed the EU’s position: publication and verification of the minutes, an end to repression and the need for a dialogue with guarantees that reflects the popular will,” Borrell wrote in a message on the social network X.

“The publication of the election results is the responsibility of the National Electoral Council (CNE)” of Venezuela, insisted the head of community diplomacy.

The country’s electoral authority declared the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro, but the results were questioned by the opposition and part of the international community.

The EU has asked the Venezuelan government to make the electoral records public in order to recognise the results, which, according to the executive, give a new victory to Maduro and, according to the opposition, give it to its candidate, Edmundo González.
