EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he would ask the bloc’s foreign ministers to consider sanctions against Israeli ministers for sending unacceptable hate messages against Palestinians.
Before attending an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Borrell said he had started a procedure to ask member states whether they would consider including on the sanctions list several Israeli ministers who have proposed things that are clearly contrary to international law and constitute an invitation to commit war crimes.
“The European Union should have no taboo in using its tools to enforce respected humanitarian law,” he said as reported by Anadolu, Saturday (31/8).
EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels for an informal meeting to discuss global and regional topics including the war in Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East. Israel continues its brutal assault on the Gaza Strip following Hamas’s October 7 offensive, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
The offensive has resulted in more than 40,500 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, and more than 93,700 injuries, according to local health authorities. The ongoing blockade of Gaza has resulted in severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, leaving much of the territory in ruins.
Israel is facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered a halt to military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians sought refuge before the area was stormed on May 6. (I-2)
