“In conversation with Edmundo González, I have reaffirmed the EU’s position: publication and verification of the minutes, an end to repression and the need for a dialogue with guarantees that reflects the popular will,” Borrell said in a message on the social network X.
The head of EU diplomacy insisted that the National Electoral Council (CNE) has the responsibility of disclosing the election results.
The communication between Borrell and González occurs after the CNE declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the presidential electionsAccording to its president, Elvis Amoroso, he obtained 51% of the votes compared to González Urrutia’s 44%, which has been strongly questioned by the opposition and the international community.
The European Union joins international organisations in calling on the Venezuelan government to make the electoral records public in order to recognise the official results.
