Borrell criticizes Orbán for wanting to cut support for Ukraine – news

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, criticized, yesterday, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s vision of wanting to end support for Ukraine, considering that it is time to do precisely the opposite.

“I know that (Viktor) Orbán is traveling the world, he visited President Macron, he went to Argentina… . It is something that will certainly be discussed (in today’s meeting [ontem]), but I hope that (Hungary) does not break European unity, this is not the time to weaken our support for Ukraine, it is precisely the opposite”, said Josep Borrell, at the entrance to a meeting of the 27 Foreign Ministers, in Brussels.

The head of European diplomacy recalled that to date the EU has provided “more than 26 billion euros in military support”, under the European Peace Support Mechanism (MEAP), to help Ukraine face the Russian invasion.

And, contrary to the opinion of some Member States, who argue that support should be provided bilaterally, Josep Borrell warned that it is necessary to coordinate it at EU level.

Russia has been intensifying the number of drone attacks since the beginning of the invasion, on February 24, 2022, but the head of European diplomacy countered that Moscow has had the highest number of casualties since the beginning of the conflict: “It is Now is the time to put all our capacity to support Ukraine.”

Therefore, Borrell will present a security proposal to increase MEAP’s capabilities.
