Experts choose special words to describe the phenomenon. The astronomers speak of a “rare rendezvous of Earth with the green comet.” The distance between our home planet and the celestial body is known – but according to the Association of Star Friends is still 42 million kilometers. That’s almost a third of the distance from Earth to the sun.
Wolfgang Zimmermann, amateur astronomer from Bork, has already managed to take a special picture of the spectacle in the sky. “For a long time the comet hid behind clouds. I wanted at least one proof photo. On January 28th there was a narrow swath of cloud, which then quickly closed once more. I was able to collect some data within an hour,” said the Borker.
Better view coming soon
During editing, he aligned all images to the comet’s nucleus. “Within an hour of its own motion, the surrounding stars became star trails. Unfortunately, the sky over Bork didn’t give much more and only the coma around the comet’s nucleus is visible and the beginning of the tail.”
However, experts announce: “You will have a better view of the comet in the northern starry sky once more in the second week of February.”
