Moscow. February 13. INTERFAX.RU – The military court of appeal changed the sentence for Boris Kagarlitsky (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) from a fine to imprisonment, Interfax was told in court.

Kagarlitsky was sentenced to five years in a general regime colony, the court said on Tuesday. The convicted person is also prohibited from administering Internet resources for two years.

Kagarlitsky was taken into custody in the courtroom.

Thus, the appeal court partially satisfied the state prosecutor’s proposal to sentence Kagarlitsky.

As reported, the Second Western District Military Court, at an off-site hearing in Syktyvkar on December 12, 2023, sentenced Kagarlitsky to a fine of 600 thousand rubles. with deprivation of the right to create and administer Internet resources for two years. The sociologist, who was previously in custody, was released in the courtroom.

The state prosecution did not agree with the verdict and submitted an appeal once morest it, in which it asked to toughen Kagarlitsky’s punishment, assigning him five and a half years in a general regime colony. The prosecutor’s office asked the sociologist to impose such a punishment in the court of first instance.

The sentence has entered into legal force and is subject to execution.

Kagarlitsky was found guilty of justifying terrorism (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

According to investigators, Kagarlitsky, being the editor-in-chief of the Rabkor project, posted a video containing a public justification of terrorism in the public domain.

Kagarlitsky did not admit guilt either during the investigation or in court. At the same time, he and his defense did not appeal the verdict, and by the time the case was considered in the appellate court, the fine assigned to him had been paid.

Kagarlitsky is a famous sociologist and political scientist. In May 2022, he was recognized as a foreign agent. The Institute of Globalization and Social Movements (IGSD), which he founded, is also recognized as a foreign agent.

In August 2023, Rosfinmonitoring included Kagarlitsky in the list of terrorists and extremists.
