President Gabriel Boric issued a nuanced and diplomatic response to his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, in relation to the diplomatic tensions that arose as a result of the case of former Chilean military officer Ronald Ojeda. From the El Loa airport in Calama, the president expressed his willingness to dialogue, but highlighted the need for Venezuela to cooperate in resolving the situation.
“What corresponds to Venezuela is to collaborate,” said Boric, underlining the importance of dialogue in the diplomatic sphere to resolve conflicts. In this context, he mentioned the presence of the Chilean ambassador in Venezuela, Jaime Gazmuri, who is receiving instructions on the actions to take to address bilateral tensions.
Boric also recognized President Maduro’s statements regarding the existence and danger of the so-called “Aragua Train,” pointing out that this represents progress with respect to previous positions. Likewise, he highlighted Chile’s willingness to participate in dialogue forums aimed at combating international and transnational crime, underlining the importance of addressing this problem at the regional level.
“In particular, I think it is important from President Maduro’s words yesterday, the recognition of the existence and danger of the Aragua Train. I think that, just like the rectifications that took place last week, is progress compared to what had been previously,” the president stated.
In a clear message, President Boric affirmed that differences between Chileans are resolved in Chile and not through dialogues with foreign leaders through the media. In this sense, he reiterated his commitment to all instances of dialogue necessary to address the differences and challenges present in the bilateral relationship.
