The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, announced this Thursday the convocation of the National Security Council (Cosena), an advisory body on matters related to national security.

This call represents the first time in more than four years that Cosena meets, the last occasion was during the government of former president Sebastián Piñera in the midst of the social outbreak.

“Next Monday, and I have communicated this to the commanders in chief of the Armed Forces and to Minister (Álvaro) Elizalde, to the Comptroller and to the presidents of the Chambers of Congress, I have decided to convene the National Security Council, the Cosena , for next Monday, first thing in the morning, to be able to receive comments and contributions regarding the best way to implement the critical infrastructure project that is currently being processed in the National Congress and that will allow us to have military resources where it is necessary to reinforce the action of the police,” the country’s highest authority explained to La Tercera.

“I also want the reflection that emerges from the Cosena meeting to be collected by the parliamentarians. And that the Critical Infrastructure Law project, which has complexities, a complex project, but one that can see the light of day soon. Cosena, established in the 1980 Constitution and reformed in 2005 during the Ricardo Lagos administration, is made up of key figures from the government and security institutions. To reach agreements, Cosena requires an absolute majority of its members, which underlines the importance of this body in making decisions related to national security.
