Bridging Borders: A Call for Stronger European Integration
Paris played host to a pivotal gathering of trailblazers dedicated to strengthening the fabric of the European Union: the Borders Forum 2024. Held on December 2 and 3, this influential event, graced by the high patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron and drawing over 300 attendees from border regions across the EU, presented a compelling case for a more cohesive Europe. The forum culminated in the presentation of the “Cross-Border Deal,” a comprehensive set of proposals designed to weave cross-border areas more intricately into the tapestry of EU policies.
The “Cross-Border Deal” focuses on three key axes: citizenship and belonging, public services that connect communities, and the sharing of vital resources. This innovative blueprint aims to dismantle the obstacles that hinder the seamless flow of people, goods, and ideas across borders, impacting nearly 30% of the European population.
The forum served as a dynamic platform for experts and professionals deeply involved in cross-border cooperation to exchange insights and experiences. Ten thematic sessions brought together a diverse array of voices: Members of the European Parliament, a former European Commissioner, Ministers, civil servants, and even a philosopher, all contributing to a rich tapestry of perspectives.
Slawomir Tokarski, the Director in charge of European Territorial Cooperation at the European Commission, lauded the launch of a groundbreaking “Data hub for EU border regions” during the forum. This initiative aims to address the critical need for harmonized data collection on border regions, paving the way for more effective policies.
The profound economic impact of cross-border barriers was powerfully underscored by Maria-Varinia Michalun, Head of the OECD Governance and Strategic Planning Unit. In her opening remarks, she revealed a startling statistic: the EU loses a staggering 3% of its GDP annually due to these obstacles. Conversely, she emphasized, removing such barriers could unleash the potential for a surge in job creation, potentially generating 3 million new jobs across the bloc.
The Borders Forum 2024 concluded with a resounding call to action: to reimagine European integration with a renewed emphasis on border regions. The “Cross-Border Deal” stands as a testament to the commitment of dedicated individuals and organizations striving to build a Europe that is not only stronger, but also more inclusive, interconnected, and prosperous.
