Bope Bokadi: The Future of Standard Liège and His Contract Extension

Last Sunday, he made Sclessin capsize with happiness with his uncrossed header. A goal which punctuated a high-flying performance from Bope Bokadi once morest Bruges. If Standard presents, at this stage of the competition, the second best defense in the elite, it is partly to their Congolese international that they owe it. Since the start of the championship, Bokadi has found his best level even if that does not prevent him from indulging in a few pranks from time to time causing some scares to his supporters.

In the meantime, at 27 years old, the man with 146 matches in the Liège jersey is in full swing. So much so that fans are starting to ask questions regarding his future. A legitimate collective question since the right-hander has entered his last year of contract. Without his numerous injuries (cruciate ligaments in both knees as well as a ruptured Achilles tendon), Bokadi would certainly no longer be Rouche at the moment. But the central defender has now spent more than seven years at Sclessin.

The player said it last season: he wants to stay

It now remains to be seen whether Bokadi will imitate Kostas Laifis (who will complete his contract this season before leaving free in June) or whether he will extend his lease. Last season, when asked regarding his future, he was clear. “I have only known two clubs in my career, TP Mazembe and Standard. I have two families, one in Lubumbashi and the other here in Liège. With my family, we like it there. My children (a girl, Merxia and a boy, Joseph) were born in Congo but grew up in Liège. That’s why I don’t want to move. If the club receives offers and I have to leave, we will talk regarding it but for me, my goal is to focus on the game and above all, to stay at Standard.

This season, Bokadi has reached a very good level.

And the Standardman pushed his thinking further. “I don’t want to leave for the sake of leaving, if I am offered a long-term contract and then supervise young people, I won’t say no. ”

He will not be dismissed if he does not extend

But then, where exactly are we in the matter of the extension of the Congolese? Discussions started several months ago. Last season, negotiations between the two parties did not lead to an agreement, Bokadi not being in phase with the proposal of the main club which was nevertheless determined to increase his salary. But at present, the hope of seeing the former TP Mazembe player extend his stay in Liège is still there, the two parties having not broken off negotiations.

At Standard, we do not intend to rule out Bope Bokadi if he does not extend his contract, like what was done with Gojko Cimirot last season. ©VKA

Also, in the event of a final disagreement, Standard does not intend to put obstacles in the way of its player and thus exclude him from the group as it was able to do last season with Selim Amallah or Nicolas Raskin who had been dismissed following the failure of negotiations. Internally, we compare the Congolese’s file more to that of Gojko Cimirot who was not dismissed despite his non-extension.
