Six years following implementing self-service checkouts in its branches, the British grocer Booths is opting for a step backwards and bringing employees back behind the checkout.
Thus, the company intends to remove this technology from 25 of its 27 supermarkets as part of its renovation program, reported Wednesday The Grocer. The goal is therefore to bring cashiers back into stores in order to provide better customer service.
Self-checkouts have allowed merchants to reduce costs associated with customer service in recent years. However, several people have expressed their frustration with this system for different reasons, linked for example to the application of regulations surrounding the purchase of alcohol – which require systematic verification of the customer’s age – or to recurring technical problems. .
“We’re not big fans of self-checkouts. We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, and that can’t be done with a robot,” Nigel Murray, managing director of Booths, told the British media.
“If competition brings prices down, we will promote quality,” he added.
However, the company believes that it is necessary to keep self-service checkouts in two of its stores, since they can be “rather busy,” says Mr. Murray.
