There might be 20% more Alzheimer’s patients within 10 years. The difficult disease of forgetting which would increase the number of people affected in our country from 210,000 to 250,000. It will be necessary to have sufficiently trained staff and also ensure the well-being of informal caregivers. A call for projects is launched to boost psychosocial research on dementia, alongside and in addition to medical research.
Thomas Calant is a caregiver at the day center “The Third Millennium” in Ixelles: “We have a psychologist, specialized educators, occupational therapists, a nurse, caregivers. We are really well equipped. We are fully staffed”. But, Thomas knows that this is not the case everywhere: “In nursing homes, I think the number one problem is lack of staff”. According to him, we must find ways to relieve healthcare workers: “It’s a job where we often find ourselves very tired. I think it’s very important that we reduce stress, that we reduce the workload”.
To improve the well-being of patients, caregivers and caregivers, a call for projects is launched to universities and colleges. The selection will take place next March. “We will, in good conscience, elect those who have the most immediate impact. Funding will be given for periods of one year, one and a half to two years, depending on the projects that are proposed”explains neurologist Eric Salmon, of the Psychosocial Research Advisory Council on Dementia.
