Boosting Mauritian Tea: Rising Production and Labor Challenges

2023-10-25 12:30:01

Mauritian tea is increasingly appreciated around the world. Production is up this year. However, producers have difficulty finding labor

No one wants to pick tea leaves anymore, it’s tiring work and often poorly paid. There are only old people left to do it, succession is not assured. The quantity produced still increased by 12% this year.

The market is quite flourishing, the blue or red packets of “Bois Chéri” are selling well. Reunion is among the leading consumers, but they are also found in France, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

The boss of one of the Mauritian brands affirms that the salaries of pickers are increasing, they are – according to him – higher than the average remuneration paid to agricultural workers.

Like other Mauritian employers, such as those in the construction and hotel industries, tea producers are asking the administration for authorization to bring in foreign labor. The procedures are long and complicated. The government is slowing down on this issue, preferring that Mauritians occupy these jobs as much as possible.
