In Ile-de-France, the vaccination campaign once morest the papillomavirus began in a heterogeneous manner in colleges, sometimes “slowly”, according to initial feedback from health and educational authorities. Among the obstacles identified: “a lack of knowledge of this vaccine and its benefits”.
“We set ourselves the objective of vaccinating 30% of 5th grade students, we are not at that level today“, declared Wednesday Amélie Verdier, the general director of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Ile-de-France, while visiting the Anne Frank college, in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, which organized this vaccination.
Without communicating an overall membership rate, “very variable from one college to another”she recognized that the beginnings were still “a little slow”. For example, at Saint-Exupéry college in Rosny-sous-Bois in Seine-Saint-Denis, only 16 students out of 192 were vaccinated on Tuesday. According to the rectorate, this operation nevertheless makes it possible to “capture an audience that would not otherwise have gone towards the vaccine”.
The campaign started on October 2 and will continue until the Christmas holidays for the injection of the first dose, the second being planned for the spring. It is offered in all public colleges and private colleges under voluntary contracts.
Every year in France, HPV – the English acronym for “human papillomavirus” – is responsible for more than 6,000 new cases of cancer, most often of the cervix, of the vulva or vagina, but also of the ENT sphere, the anus or even the penis. Launched on the market in the 2000s, the HPV vaccine has since proven itself once morest infection by these viruses.
Among the obstacles identified:a lack of knowledge of this vaccine and its benefits”underlined Amélie Verdier, insisting on the “need to explain that it is an extremely effective vaccine“At Anne-Franck college, 26% of the 120 5th grade students were vaccinated on Wednesday.”For a try, we are quite satisfied”noted the principal, Farida Pariolleau.
Among the fears expressed by reluctant families: “those linked to vaccination in general”. “This vaccination also sometimes touches on taboos, particularly around sexuality”, she continued, counting on a “long-term work of explanation”.
In the Paris academy, the membership rate is “not bad“, more “variable“according to the colleges, underlined the rector Christophe Kerrero, judging”encouraging“the beginnings of the campaign.
In the capital, 114 public colleges are affected as well as 64 private colleges. Among the latter, only six volunteered to organize this vaccination, he told AFP.
