Faced with weak GDP growth in the region, the opposition at City Hall criticized the mayor for “dragging his feet” and neglecting the economy, to which Bruno Marchand countered that the politician had little to see in the economic performance of the region.

“Being attractive is not just the mayor’s fault. If a mayor tells you: “The economy is doing well, it’s because of me”, beware of that mayor. The economy is much more complicated than the action of a mayor and a political administration”, launched Bruno Marchand.
The mayor of Quebec was anticipating the reactions of the opposition to the economic growth report released on Tuesday which shows that the census metropolitan area (CMA) of Quebec is recording the lowest growth rate in Canada in 2022, with 1.5%.
dragging one’s feet
The two oppositions of Québec d’abord and Équipepriorite Québec (ÉPQ) wasted no time in blaming the town hall for these disappointing performances. The economy does not seem to interest Bruno Marchand, says the leader of the official opposition, Claude Villeneuve. “We don’t know what his plan is for the economic development of Quebec. Every time we talk to him regarding it, it’s as if we have the impression of forcing a teenager to go clean his room. It’s always backwards.”
“I think politics has an impact,” said Patrick Paquet, of ÉPQ. “While he is dragging his feet and we talk a lot regarding the environment, during this time, we don’t talk regarding the economy.”
He affirms that merchants complain of a lack of listening on the part of the City. “I think it’s a signal that we’re sending to the Marchand administration,” he says, while agreeing that the harm cannot be entirely attributed to them. He [le maire] must take care of the economy a little more in Quebec.”
Politics, not the source of the problem
For Bruno Marchand, “analyzes do not identify politics as the source of the problem.”
The politician, he agrees, can however act on the attractiveness of the city and the workforce, which his administration does on a daily basis, he assures us. In particular by working on the tram project which is “essential” for the attractiveness of the city, according to him. Just like the various mobility options he wants to put in place.
“We need to attract people here to rejuvenate our city. Mainly for economic reasons.
He points out that Quebec has received more immigration than other cities in Quebec, apart from Montreal. “We attract more people here than we have ever attracted compared to other cities in Quebec.”
