Drinking tea and coffee in middle age gives you strength in old age

A new study has revealed that drinking a cup of tea or coffee daily in middle age can keep you stronger into old age, as it is linked to a lower likelihood of developing physical weakness as you age.

According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, the study was conducted by a team from the National University of Singapore, and included 12,000 participants, aged between 45 and 74 years, who were followed for 20 years.

Participants were first interviewed in middle age, when their average age was 53, and were asked regarding their drinking habits for caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks and foods such as chocolate.

After the participants reached the age of 73, they were asked some questions, including questions regarding their weight and how active they felt. They were also examined for their hand grip strength and the time it took to complete a test to stand and walk to a specific destination.

The researchers said that there are several factors that show a person suffering from physical weakness with age, the most important of which are severe weight loss, fatigue, slowness, and muscle weakness.

The researchers indicated that 84 percent of the participants reported constantly drinking coffee, while 12 percent reported drinking tea.

More than two-thirds (68.5%) drank coffee on a daily basis. In this group, 52.9 percent drank one cup per day, 42.2 percent consumed two to three cups per day, while 4.9 percent drank 4 or more cups per day.

As for tea drinkers, they were classified into 4 groups according to the frequency of their consumption of it. The first group never consumes it, while the second group drinks it at least once a month, the third group drinks it at least once a week, while the fourth group consumes it on a daily basis.

The results showed that drinking coffee or tea in middle age was associated with a lower likelihood of developing physical frailty in late life.

The researchers pointed out that the greater the amount of caffeine consumed, the lower the risk of physical weakness in old age.

A study published last year confirmed that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily can significantly prolong life, as drinking ground coffee reduced the probability of death by 27 percent, while instant coffee reduced this probability by 14 percent, compared to 11 percent. percent for decaffeinated coffee.
