The Sustainable Health Program hosts Dr. Nabil Dagher, a specialist in family medicine, emergency medicine and cosmetic medicine, to open a file: How do we transform negative stress into positive energy?
A recent medical study: Hugging reduces stress and improves mood
A recent medical study indicated that hugs have a significant positive effect on stress and mood.
This study was conducted by Michael Murphy and his colleagues from the Carnegie Mellon University Research Laboratory, and was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
The study found that hugging increased positive feelings and reduced negative feelings on days when people suffered from relationship problems.
Murphy said this simple and direct behavior (hugging) may be an effective way to support men and women who are experiencing conflict in their social and family relationships.
Murphy and his colleagues interviewed regarding 400 adults by phone every night for two weeks. Each person was asked regarding their mood, whether they had experienced a struggle and whether they had received a hug that day, among other questions.
Each person also underwent a physical examination and filled out a questionnaire regarding their health and social network at the beginning of the study.
Finally, the study indicated that hugs between close people may be a simple, direct and effective way to show support for a person suffering from problems and conflicts in his social or family relationships.
