Citing a study published in ≪European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry≫ on the 28th, psypost cited a study in which children who engaged in physical activity early in the morning tended to be happier than those who did not. The white matter microstructure of the brain was also found to be healthy.

White matter is a tissue made up of nerve fibers that form the brain’s communication network, enabling the transmission of information and the coordination of various brain functions. These white matter structures of the brain develop as children grow.

The researchers studied 110 overweight or obese Spanish children between the ages of 8 and 11 and observed how their early morning activity patterns affected feelings of happiness, self-esteem, optimism, stress, depression and anxiety.

The results of the study showed that children who were physically active in the morning improved the structural integrity of brain tissue and myelin. Myelin is a white fatty substance that surrounds nerve cells like the plastic covering of an electric wire and protects electrical signals transmitted through neurons from leaking or scattering.

“Children who did more morning activity showed higher fractional anisotropy, a measure of brain tissue integrity in the longitudinal fascial region of the brain, and lower ‘radial diffusivity,’ a measure of myelin integrity,” the researchers said. “The children with better brain tissue and myelin integrity showed a happier appearance,” he said.
