A Legacy of Literacy: Family Honors Beloved Teacher with Marian Home Library

Fort Dodge, IA – A tribute to both the joy of reading and the concrete love of family, a new library at the Marian Home and Village stands as a permanent reminder of one woman’s passion for families to enjoy the world through books. Marilyn Moeding, a teacher who dedicated her life to fostering a love of reading in her own six children and countless others, finds herself subtly honored in a newly dedicated library filled with books, not in a formal library setting, but rather in Halverson Hall, a convivial space where residents can gather with loved ones. It’s here that Marilyn’s children wished to create a lasting tribute.

For Marilyn, reading wasn’t just about the stories within the pages. It was about the opportunity and peace fostered in those quiet moments with a good book

Building on their mother’s own extensive collection, generations of readers in Fort Dodge will benefit from the generosity of the Moeding family. The library is filled with all types of books, from large print for easier reading, to Kindles for those who prefer a modern touch. Marilyn’s son Jack crafted a special Bible stand using wood from their family dining table, where countless memories were made.

“We wanted to do something that could truly capture Mom’s love for reading," said Jayne Kolacia, Marilyn’s daughter. "She taught us more than just reading itself.

"Right up until the end, she wasn’t without a book, "said Tracy Trotter, administrator of Marian Home, "This library was just perfect as it embodies everything she loved: books, community and connection.

The library existed years in the making, put into motion in the last few weeks of Marilyn’s life as she resided at the living center. As a teacher for many years – alongside her husband John – Marilyn instilled a tremendous passion for learning within her own six children.

What followed are countless shared bookshelves and comfy seats, nestled alongside donated books, making it the perfect spot for residents to curl up with a great read within Marian Home, where, surrounded by family and friends. “It’s sad that she didn’t get to see the finished product,” said Kolacia, “but I know in her heart, this place would bring her so much joy.”
